What is Japandi Design?

If you haven’t heard about Japandi design yet, it is a new trend which focuses on a simple and comfortable feel in the home, with a emphasis on nature.

What does Japandi mean?

This new style is a merging of Japanese and Scandinavian design elements, hence the term ‘Japandi’.  It combines classic Scandinavian functionality with the rustic minimalism of Japan.  It has many similar elements to New Nordic design schemes, as it has an emphasis on nature and texture.

This is about a philosophy of living as well as design style, with influences from wabi-sabi and hygge.  Wabi-sabi is the ancient Japanese philosophy in which simplicity, a slower pace of life and contentment are important.  Hygge is the better known Scandinavian practice which values wellbeing, comfort and cosy surroundings.

Japandi is all about clean lines and beautiful, functional furnishings.  Rather than being a sparse type of minimalism, it is intentional.  Natural influences are a big part of this style, from plants to muted colours.

Sustainability is another feature, with furniture and fittings which are expertly crafted from natural materials and made to last.  Everything should serve a purpose within the room and also add to the aesthetics of it.

How do I encorporate Japandi in the home?

As with any design ideas, just pick the parts that you like and use them where they will fit in with your existing decor, there’s no need to do it 100% if you don’t want to.

A large, open room is a good place to start with plenty of natural light.  Paint the walls in muted neutrals and choose solid wood furniture and plants to complement them.  The hallway is also a perfect area to bring in these design elements, so you have a calm and peaceful entrance to your home.

As the world is putting more focus on environmental responsibility and sustainability, it’s a good way to look at any new purchases you need to make for the house.  Where you can, choose items  which have been made with sustainable, natural materials and practices, that you love and will last you for years and years.  Light oak is favoured for floors and furniture as it has a warm, serene feel.  Lowered furniture is popular in Japandi, in off-whites, muted grey and beige.

Get rid of any clutter, as this style is all about space and calm.  It can still be cosy though, as this is very much part of Scandinavian style with warm and soft furnishings.  Combine this with the elegance of Japanese design and you have a stunning Japandi concept.

Plants are always a beautiful addition to the home and will benefit the aesthetics in any room from the kitchen to the bathroom and bedroom.  They actually improve the air quality and add natural pops of colour.  Delicate plants like bonsai trees, hanging planters and bamboo are ideal for a Japandi inspired room.

What colours are best?

Japandi design has a strong focus on muted, natural hues.  The ideal colours for this are all neutrals; white from the clean, fresh Scandinavian style and beige, brown and terracota which are all big in Japanese design.  This covers both warm and cool colours which complement each other perfectly to give a calm, relaxed feel to the home.

Painting the walls with light terracota, oatmeal, stone or brown paint is perfect for bringing Japandi into the home.  Even an accent wall in a warm terracota shade will make a big difference to how the room feels, creating a peaceful, neutral background which highlights natural light.

These colours look stunning with wood floors and furniture, textured materials and plants.  Bringing in some pops of darker colour also adds depth to this design scheme, but it needs to be quite sparing so it does not become overwhelming.  If you want something a little more colourful, muted pinks are ideal.
